I give a more detailed answer to why I think the problem is more fundamental. I think Medium, for example, does a much better job at promoting quality content rather than reward clicks. I like the vision. But I'm skeptical that clickbait headlines will ever become a thing of the past. Even on Medium, I would be surprised if the most read articles aren't of the "click-bait" variety.
Like you said, the best we can do is to spread awareness and hope that more people come to realize the problem and protect their children and themselves from being a victim of various tactics aimed at getting you to click.
